Google announced its annual Science Fair today, calling for project submissions from students worldwide, age 13 to 18.
This year’s Google Science Fair grand prize winner will get a trip to Spaceport America in New Mexico to meet the Virgin Galactic team as they prepare for a space flight. Another big prize includes a 10-day expedition to the Galapagos islands on the National Geographic ship Endeavour.
Scientific American is awarding one student a year’s worth of mentoring along with a $50,000 grant toward any project that focuses on a health, resource or environmental challenge.
Age category prizes include a trip to the LEGO factory in Billund, Denmark, Google’s offices, or the National Geographic offices.
Google is introducing two new award categories this year: a Computer Science Award and Local Award. The Computer Science Award will recognize “innovation and excellence” in computer sciences. The Local Award will go to students in select geographic locations whose projects address community issues.
Started in 2011, this is the fourth science fair Google has hosted in partnership with Scientific American, LEGO Education, National Geographic, and new this year, Virgin Galactic. Submissions are due by May 12, with winners announced on September 22 at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, CA.
Students can register for the science fair at www.GoogleScienceFair.com.
