In November of 1919, President Wilson declared November 11 Armistice Day, a national holiday dedicated to those who gave their life in World War I. According to the Veterans Affairs website, Wilson proclaimed:

With an Act passed by Congress, Armistice Day became an official legal holiday on May 13, 1938. After World War II, Congress amended the Act in 1954 by replacing the word Armistice with Veterans to represent soldiers of all American wars.

The Veterans Affair website defines Veterans Day as, “A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”
